Maddie Mellon : My Bloody Wife - detail
This is an oil portrait (365x424mm) of a Tatar woman looking up as she breaks through a skin of water. Her large brown eyes entreat the viewer, her black hair swirls in the water below, and she looks serene, sweet and enticing; if you ignore the fact that blood is eddying down her nose and chin. It is entitled My Bloody Wife. 365mm x 424mm oil on wood

Maddie Mellon : Klara
These two pieces depict the two most significant relationships in my life - at least among those that could be defined as romantic. One introduced me to the profound power of love, and the other to its many forms, its complexity, and its ability to shift and grow. The fact that both people happen to be women feels somewhat arbitrary… incidental. I've been "in love" in the truly romantic sense once, in an increasingly distant past. And yet, love permeates every cell of my existence, and I am profoundly held in my life. For me, queer joy is a defiance of convention, an ecstatic freedom from external expectation. I hope the combination of these paintings - both warmth and serenity; security and intrigue; intimacy and humour; loves co-existing - will invite the viewer to experience some precious fragment of it.
